Pursuing Financial Benefits For Veterans And Their Families

At Brothers & Henderson, P.S., we hold those who served to defend our country in the highest regard. We have a deep debt of gratitude to members of the military. We offer professional, accessible guidance to veterans and their families in navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) system. Specifically, we can assist people who are eligible for the VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound Benefit program.

What Is The VA Aid And Attendance or Housebound Benefit?

This program is a monthly stipend that is available in addition to a VA pension. This benefit (also called the Special Monthly Pension with Aid and Attendance) was created to help veterans and their surviving spouses with medical costs. Eligibility for this benefit requires that the person applying meet certain basic qualifications as well as some asset and income limits.

Who qualifies? Veterans who served during identified wartime periods (though not necessarily in an active combat zone) typically qualify for this benefit. Generally speaking, it is intended for people who aren’t yet at the point of applying for Medicaid, but who still have medical needs that could use some extra monthly income. To successfully apply for this benefit, you must meet some eligibility requirements.

What are the qualifications? If you are a veteran, spouse or widow of a veteran, you can seek this benefit if you meet two qualification levels. These qualifications include having served at least 90 days in active duty, having been honorably discharged, having served during a time of war, being over 65 years old or completely disabled. You must not be able to drive a car. Your assets and monthly income are also taken into account.

What are the monthly payouts? These range from about $1,200 to about $2,100. These rates change annually to adjust for cost of living changes.
